Laying the Foundation

The Bethel Series teaches that the Bible is the Word of God and that it provides Christians with a guideline for daily living. Bible story lessons are taught in church school classes and, for many adults, these stories and moral lessons are the extent of what they know about the Bible. This, then, is the starting point for many church members, and now the challenge is to get them involved at the adult level in what the Bible says—and what the Bible means.

The Bible Gap

What the pastor preaches from the pulpit and what the congregation hears can be two entirely different things. We label this “The Bible Gap," and it exists in most churches. Pastors have reported that one of the joys of using the Bethel Series is to witness the response of the Bethel-trained members as they hear concepts within the context of the sermon. Of course, not only does the pastor enjoy the response--the lay person also has an amazing grasp of the Scriptures through studying with the Bethel Series, and it’s surprising how differently the student hears the preaching of God’s Word.

There is a fairly common perception that there is little or no interest in the church for an adult Bible study. Not true! There will always be a hunger for God’s Word and our churches must work diligently to narrow the Bible gap. Building a biblical base of knowledge works to strengthen the church from within and thus prepares the laity to reach out and be a blessing to the surrounding community. The Bethel Series is the tool that builds a biblically literate congregation.

"One of the great pleasures and fulfillments of being a pastor is seeing the knowledge of the Lord increase in the lives of the parishioners. Well, Bethel does that very thing. To see and experience the excitement of God's Word becoming real and alive in the lives of each of these students is so very refreshing."
